DESOTO, Texas – Standing nearly 7-feet-tall, Derick Phillips, described as a “gentle giant,” by his friends was tragically gunned down while simply doing his job.
Phillips, 47, was working at the Brickhouse Lounge last Friday in Desoto in the 2000 Block of North Hampton Road when the incident took place.
Police said he didn’t have a gun on him when he was shot and killed.
“Phillips was transported to an area hospital and was pronounced dead after his arrival,” Lieutenant Chris Huerta of the Desoto Police Department said.
The two men got into an argument over lounge rules that quickly escalated into Phillips being shot multiple times.
“The suspect was smoking in the building and was asked to take the cigarette outside,” Huerta said.
At the time of the shooting, an unknown bystander returned fire striking the man who has been identified as a Denton County resident of Savannah, 48-year-old Toussel Kuhn.
Kuhn fled the scene in an unknown vehicle only to crash in the nearby city of Glenn Heights.
He was taken to a local hospital for treatment and taken into custody.
Police were able to determine it was Kuhn who shot and killed Phillips through security footage and witness statements.
Kuhn was taken into custody and is charged with murder.
