New School Year brings Excitement, Changes to DeSoto ISD

The first day of school for DeSoto ISD is officially in the books, and students around the district have noticed a significant change in what they can wear to school.

DeSoto ISD has switched to wearing uniforms for kindergarten through 12th-grade students this year.

The dress code calls for students district-wide to wear collared tops and shirts in solid green, gold, black, white, or gray. Solid-colored pants, shorts, capris, skirts, and jumpers should be black, khaki, gray, navy, or olive.

With the new change in uniforms and the excitement of the first day of school, the district is emphasizing learning and safety.

“Uniforms create a sense of culture and belongingness. Just a pride piece for our kids to walk up and down the hall and in the district’s colors of green and gold is one really great benefit,” said Chief Communications Officer Tiffanie Blackmon-Jones, speaking to NBC5 DFW.

“The other piece is security and safety. Last year we saw the state of Texas look at a lot of laws and registration and around or in legislation around intruders. And so having children in uniforms is an easy way to spot someone that does not belong there who may be out of place.”

The hallways within the district were abuzz with excitement Monday as students returned for the first day of the new school year.

The district kicked off the academic year with renewed energy and a focus on creating a safe and enriching learning environment for all students.

Residents and parents visited the DeSoto ISD Facebook page to share their thoughts and feelings about the first day of school.

“DeSoto Eagles in action a great start for greater to come,” said Cynthia Watson-Banks.

“Wow, I remember these days. Go be great kids. Don’t you dare settle! Take hold and FLY because you are Eagles,” C’Net Rolen Davis posted on the page.

DeSoto Mayor Rachel Proctor also took to Facebook to voice her support for the new school year.

“The first day of school in City of DeSoto, was everything!

Had an amazing first day visiting DeSoto West Middle School! We welcomed students & celebrated this year’s cohort for the Male Leadership Academy,” said Proctor.
