St. Petersburg, FL – In a long-awaited return to playoff action since 2016, the Texas Rangers clinched a decisive 4-0 victory against the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 of the AL Wildcard Series on Tuesday.
The Rangers capitalized on an uncharacteristic four errors committed by the Rays in the opening game of this best-of-three series.
Texas’ pitching was on full display as Jordan Montgomery delivered an impressive performance, lasting seven innings and allowing a mere six hits to secure the shutout win while striking out five batters.
On the other hand, it was a night to forget for Tampa Bay’s Tyler Glasnow, who struggled on the mound.
Glasnow pitched five innings, committing three errors and walking five batters, although he managed to strike out eight hitters.
The Rangers took an early lead with a sacrifice flyout in the top of the second inning, with runners at the corners.
Seizing the moment, Rangers’ Leody Taveras promptly stole second base, later advancing to third following an overthrow by the Rays’ catcher.
In the same inning, Glasnow walked Rangers’ Left Fielder Evan Carter, prompting a visit from the Rays’ manager.
Carter’s steal of second marked the Rangers’ second stolen base of the game, highlighting the team’s aggressive approach.
The Rays made a third pitching change of the game, demonstrating frustrations unfolding in this high-stakes matchup.
As the series continues, both teams will undoubtedly look to make adjustments to gain the upper hand.
All ALWC games will stay in St. Petersburg as the Rangers look to take game 2.
Rangers starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi will face off against Zach Eflin on the mound.
The game begins at 2 p.m.
