In what was anticipated as a revenge match following last year’s playoff loss, the Dallas Cowboys instead endured a humiliating defeat on Sunday night at the hands of their NFC rival, the San Francisco 49ers, with a crushing score of 42-10.
From the start, the 49ers seized control of the game, marching 75 yards down the field against the Cowboys’ defense, which had established itself as one of the league’s best.
Niners Quarterback Brock Purdy dissected the Cowboys’ secondary with a 19-yard TD pass to tight end George Kettle on their opening drive.
Kettle would go on to score two more times against a defense that sorely missed one of the league’s top cornerbacks, Treyvon Diggs.
Before the Cowboys’ offense could respond with a score of its own, the Niners had already put up 14 points against the top-ranked defense in the league.
Purdy completed the game with four touchdowns, with three of them to Kettle.
“I knew it was our biggest game so far this year as far as nationally and just media-wise and the hype,” coach Kyle Shanahan said to reporters.
“Sometimes you worry your team can get too up for stuff. … They were so locked in all week. They didn’t make too big a deal of this game and were ready to go.”
Purdy finished the game with a 17-for-24 passing record and 252 yards.
The Cowboys’ rushing game was a nonfactor, as the 49ers allowed a mere 57 yards on the ground.
Dak Prescott completed 14 of 24 passes for 153 yards and one touchdown, which came in the form of a 26-yard TD pass to KaVontae Turpin in the second quarter.
Leading up to Sunday night’s game, Prescott had only thrown one interception, but the relentless pressure applied by the Niners’ defense resulted in three interceptions.
“Didn’t see it coming,” Prescott said. “Put everything into this, and got punched in the mouth. It was humbling a couple weeks ago against Arizona. But this may be the most humbling game I’ve ever been a part of.”
The 49ers boasted the league’s top defense in terms of points and yards allowed, and their dominance was evident as they held the Cowboys to just 10 points.
The Cowboys travel to Los Angeles to face the Chargers on Sunday, October 16th.
