DeSoto residents will soon be paying more in water and sanitation rates beginning Oct.1 as the city council approved a 13% increase in rates.
The council approved the new rates in the Sept. 19 meeting, and residents can expect to see their sanitation rate increase from $26.52 to $29.97 per month.
The increased rates for sanitation are in part due to the increased service levels that residents will receive under the new sanitation contract, which will go into effect on June 1, 2024.
The increased revenue will cover garbage collection and disposal costs and fund the city’s street sweeping and litter crew operations.
The increased revenue also funds new personnel, vehicles, and equipment.
The 13% rate increase also affects commercial customers who contract with Republic Services directly.
Water rates are scheduled to increase by 8% in both the water base and volume rates, and the sewer rate will see a 9% increase in both the minimum sewer base rate and the sewer volume rate.
Residents who use an average 7,500-gallon water user will see a $11.64 monthly increase in their water/sewer rate.
Residents can view the table below for a comparison of residential sanitation service levels under the current contract versus the sanitation service levels under the new contract.
