SHEPHERD, TEXAS – A significant fire erupted at a chemical plant in rural Texas on Wednesday, causing a plume of black smoke to billow into the sky.
In response, local authorities closed a nearby highway and issued a shelter-in-place order for residents.
The incident occurred in Shepherd, Texas, a rural area situated approximately 60 miles northeast of Houston.
The explosion occurred at Sound Resource Solutions, a company primarily involved in the recycling and repackaging of various chemicals.
According to statements from the plant’s owner, the explosion was triggered by an accident involving a forklift and is currently under investigation.
The mishap resulted in a sizable fire, which drew the attention of authorities.
San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers disclosed that reports of the explosion started pouring in shortly after 8 a.m.
One plant employee was injured in the incident, suffering minor burns to his body.
The injured worker was transported to a hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition.
Preliminary information suggests that the chemicals involved in the fire included flammable liquids, potentially including diesel and turpentine.
