In lieu of the increase in illegal border crossings by migrants, January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and the state of Texas stands at the forefront of a collective effort to combat the pervasive issue of human trafficking.

This modern-day slavery demands heightened awareness, education, and action to protect vulnerable individuals, with alarming statistics underscoring the urgency of the crises.

In 2021, 10,360 human trafficking cases were identified, according to the National Human Trafficking Hotline.

Nearly 7,500 cases were related to sex trafficking, while a little over 1,000 involved labor trafficking.

Law enforcement agencies have been collaborating with non-governmental organizations and advocacy groups to identify and prosecute traffickers while ensuring comprehensive support for survivors.

Texas has implemented specialized units, such as the Human Trafficking and Transnational/Organized Crime Section, to combat trafficking effectively.

Human Trafficking Awareness Month provides a critical platform for Texans to educate themselves about the signs of trafficking, support survivors, and advocate for stronger policies.

By recognizing the indicators and understanding the prevalence of trafficking, individuals in the state can contribute significantly to the prevention and eradication of this heinous crime.

Nonprofit organizations in Texas, as well as around the country, continue to aid Texas law enforcement in the fight against human trafficking.
