The DeSoto Police Department has shut down illegal gambling activities at four local food marts early Tuesday morning.
In a coordinated effort early Tuesday, DeSoto Police executed search warrants at four local establishments suspected of illegal gambling involving gaming machines.
These gaming machines are known as “8 Liners.” The operation resulted in the seizure of 60 gaming machines and $17,000 in cash.
The establishments found in violation of illegal gaming laws include:
- Happy Mart – 1100 E. Pleasant Run #133
- Family Mart – 1231 E. Pleasant Run #114
- Daily Food Mart – 900 N. Polk #102
- DeSoto Food Mart – 901 N. Polk #303
“This is just the first wave of warrant searches conducted against area establishments suspected of illegal gaming, and violators should know that we are monitoring other reports of alleged illegal activity and will be coming for them next,” Said DeSoto Police Chief Joe Costa.
“This type of activity hurts our community and our residents and will not be tolerated.”
In addition to targeting illegal gambling, DeSoto Police are working closely with the Fire and Development Services departments to ensure these establishments comply with fire regulations, City-issued Certificates of Occupancy, and building permits.
The businesses have been cited for committing a Class A Misdemeanor for Keeping of a Gambling Place.
Formal charges are pending as the investigation continues.
Residents who suspect illegal gambling in their community are encouraged to report it to DeSoto Police at (469) 658-3050.
