In a tragic incident that unfolded, a Dallas Police officer has died after fellow officers discovered him shot while sitting in a marked squad car according to a press release.
On the night of Aug. 29, the tragic incident unfolded when Dallas Police responded to an officer in distress call in the 900 block of East Ledbetter Drive.
At approximately 10:10 p.m., officers arrived at the scene to find a fellow officer shot while sitting in a marked squad car police said.
In the ensuing chaos, officers exchanged gunfire with a suspect at the scene.
During the shootout, two officers were struck by gunfire.
The officers were immediately transported to local hospitals, where one officer was pronounced dead, another in critical condition, and the third is listed in stable condition.
The suspect involved in the shooting fled the scene, leading officers on a pursuit that ended in Lewisville, in the 1000 block of Stemmons Freeway.
The suspect exited the vehicle armed with a long gun according to police.
Dallas Police officers on the scene responded by opening fire on the suspect, who died as a result.
The City of Dallas has ordered flags at all city facilities to be flown at half-staff in honor of the fallen officer.
The DeSoto Police Department took to social media to show solidarity and pay tribute to the Dallas Police Department and the fallen officer.
“We pray for the families and friends of the involved officers and wish the two surviving officers a speedy recovery,” the post read.
The investigation is ongoing.
