City of DeSoto Clarifies Letters About Water Service Line Materials

The City of DeSoto has issued a clarification regarding letters sent to residents in early November 2024 about “Unknown Water Service Line Materials.”

The letters delivered are part of a regulatory effort under the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Lead and Copper Rule, which mandates water systems to identify the materials used in service lines on both the city and customer sides of the meter.

City officials stressed that this communication is legitimate and not a scam, reassuring residents that DeSoto’s water remains safe for consumption.

As of now, approximately 75% of the city’s water service lines have been inspected, and no lead materials have been found, according to the city.

The city is working to complete all inspections before the 2027 federal compliance deadline.

“The City of DeSoto is focused on protecting the health of every household in our community,” the notice stated.

Officials are urging residents to share information with others who may drink or cook with water at affected properties, including homes, schools, and businesses.

City officials cautioned that some service lines may contain lead or galvanized pipes previously connected to lead service lines.

Lead exposure can pose significant health risks, especially for young children and pregnant women, if it contaminates drinking water.

For those concerned about potential lead service lines, the city advises taking precautions such as using water filters certified for lead removal or running water for several minutes before use to flush out potential contaminants.

Residents are encouraged to verify any communications directly with the Utilities Department by calling 972-230-9627 and to avoid spreading unverified information on social media.

A complete inventory of water service line materials is available on the city’s website, providing additional details for those interested.

For further assistance, residents can also contact the City of DeSoto at 972-230-9640 or visit the city’s official website at desototexas.gov.
