DeSoto Police Arrest Wanted Felon After Foot Chase with K-9 Unit

The DeSoto Police Department successfully apprehended a wanted felon Friday evening, thanks to the swift actions of a K-9 officer and the Delta Shift team.

Police identified the suspect as 30-year-old Tyler Lee Smith of Amarillo, Texas.

He was wanted on multiple felony charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and felon in possession of a firearm, according to police.

The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. when K-9 Officer Robertson spotted Smith in the parking lot of an apartment complex located in the 1100 block of E. Wintergreen Road, law enforcement said.

Upon noticing the officer, Smith fled on foot through a nearby field but was quickly apprehended by the K-9 and responding officers.

During the encounter, Smith allegedly attempted to conceal his identity by impersonating another individual, police said.

Officers reported that he was carrying a Social Security card and a Texas driver’s license bearing the name of the person he was attempting to impersonate.

Despite his efforts, officers were already aware of his true identity and moved swiftly to take him into custody.

Smith is facing several charges in connection with the incident, including evading arrest on foot, failure to identify as a fugitive/providing false information, and fraudulent possession of identifying information.

The Potter County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that he was also wanted for violating parole related to a previous aggravated assault conviction.

Police Chief Joe Costa praised the efforts of the K-9 unit and the Delta Shift team, stating, “Thanks to the quick action of our K-9 unit and Delta Shift officers, we were able to ensure the safety of our community by apprehending a suspect who poses a significant risk. The DeSoto Police Department continues to prioritize public safety and will take all necessary steps to keep the community safe from individuals who violate the law.”

The DeSoto Police Department is reminding residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

In their ongoing effort to protect the community, officials urge residents to follow the principle: “If you see something, say something.”
