A North Texas producer who built his career across Ennis, Dallas, and DeSoto has reached a major milestone after signing with the newly revived Death Row Records.
Elgin “E-Mak” McDonald, known for his dual presence in hip-hop and boutique cigar culture, officially joined the label on Nov. 2 following decades of independent work rooted in the Best Southwest region.
McDonald said the moment represents a long-awaited shift in his career.
“It is an honor and a pleasure to be working with the iconic label Death Row Records,” he said, describing the signing as the result of years of persistence.
His journey began in 1990 when his family relocated from Minnesota to Ennis.
As a teenager, he gained early recognition in hip-hop production and developed a reputation for self-taught skill and originality.
After moving to Dallas, he expanded his network and sharpened his sound while exploring entrepreneurship.
McDonald’s business efforts grew with the help of close friends through the cigar brand Hawk McSaylor, which later helped inspire his own boutique line, Hue Level Cigars.
The venture broadened his local profile and connected him with new audiences while he continued pushing deeper into music production.
After settling in DeSoto, McDonald founded Tuff Tune Productions, establishing a home base for his creative work.
In 2024, he launched the Beat series “If I Was on Death Row,” a project that showcased his interpretations of the label’s classic and modern sound.
The series drew consistent attention online and eventually reached a Death Row A&R representative.
McDonald said the signing reflects years of discipline and belief.
“After 25+ years in music production, I finally feel a breakthrough,” he said. “The power of manifestation is real. God gave me the vision, a plan was made, I locked in and simply did the work.”
For DeSoto, McDonald’s rise shows the influence of locally developed talent and the growing creative footprint of independent artists in North Texas.
