Southwest Airlines is rolling out significant changes to its baggage and fare policies, marking a shift in the airline’s customer experience.

Beginning May 28, 2025, customers will face charges for checked baggage on most fares, ending the airline’s long-standing practice of offering two free checked bags.

Under the new policy, customers traveling on Business Select fares or holding Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred status will continue to receive two free checked bags.

A-List members and other select customers will receive one free checked bag. Rapid Rewards Credit Card holders will also receive one free checked bag.

Customers who do not qualify for these benefits will be charged for their first and second checked bags, with weight and size limitations applying.

“We have tremendous opportunity to meet current and future customer needs, attract new customer segments we don’t compete for today, and return to the levels of profitability that both we and our shareholders expect,” said Bob Jordan, president, CEO, and vice chairman of Southwest Airlines. “We will do all this while remaining focused on what’s made us strong—our people and the authentic, friendly, and award-winning customer service only they can provide.”

Along with baggage fee changes, Southwest is introducing a new Basic fare category.

This lower-priced ticket option will have fewer amenities, including no free checked bags.

Additionally, the airline is adjusting its Rapid Rewards program, offering customers more points for Business Select fares while earning fewer points on Wanna Get Away and Wanna Get Away Plus fares.

The program will also introduce variable redemption rates for higher-demand flights.

The airline continues to focus on expanding its distribution channels, now offering flights and fare products through Expedia.

Southwest has also seen strong performance in operational metrics, with 98.3% of its published flight schedule operating without cancellations in February 2025.

These initiatives come as Southwest continues its efforts to maintain its position as a leader in customer service while adjusting to the evolving travel landscape.
