GLENDALE, Ariz. — Joe Milton III strengthened his case for the Dallas Cowboys’ backup quarterback job Saturday night, accounting for three touchdowns in a 34-13 preseason victory over the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium.
Milton started and completed 9 of 13 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. He also scored on a 1-yard quarterback draw as Dallas built a 24-6 halftime lead.
The Cowboys struck early after Shavon Revel intercepted Gardner Minshew on Arizona’s opening possession. Milton turned the short field into points with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Malik Davis.
Dallas extended its lead when Milton connected with Jonathan Mingo for a 53-yard touchdown. Later, Milton found Camden Brown for a 70-yard gain that set up his rushing touchdown.
The Cowboys’ defense also turned in a strong preseason performance. Rookie linebacker Jaishawn Barham made his preseason debut after missing the opener with a groin injury and finished with five tackles, including one for loss.
Revel’s interception helped set the tone for a unit that limited Arizona to one touchdown.
Sam Howell played in the second half and completed 7 of 10 passes for 65 yards with one interception.
Brandon Aubrey made field goals from 50 and 29 yards, while Phil Mafah added a 15-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Dallas improved to 2-0 in the preseason after defeating Seattle 17-7 in its opener.
The Cowboys take on the Saints at home in AT&T Stadium on Friday Aug. 28, at 7 p.m. for the final preseason game.
