ARLINGTON, Texas — A seventh-inning bullpen collapse erased a two-run lead and spoiled a solid start from Jacob deGrom as the Texas Rangers fell 6-4 to the Seattle Mariners on Sunday at Globe Life Field.
Dominic Canzone and Randy Arozarena hit home runs on consecutive pitches during a four-run seventh inning as the Seattle Mariners rallied past the Rangers.
Texas carried a 3-1 lead into the seventh before Seattle turned the game around against the Rangers’ bullpen.
J.P. Crawford grounded out against Tyler Alexander to begin the inning, but Colt Emerson and Cole Young followed with singles.
Cole Winn entered and retired Julio Rodríguez before Canzone drove a three-run home run down the right-field line, giving Seattle a 4-3 advantage.
Arozarena homered to right-center field on Winn’s next pitch, pushing the Mariners’ lead to 5-3. Winn allowed two runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning and was charged with the loss and his second blown save.
The Rangers took an early lead after Joc Pederson doubled and Wyatt Langford singled in the first inning. Ezequiel Duran brought Pederson home with a sacrifice fly.
Seattle tied the game in the third when Young tripled and scored on Rodríguez’s broken-bat single.
Texas moved back in front with two runs in the fourth. Brandon Nimmo reached on an infield single, and Jake Burger walked before Evan Carter delivered an RBI single to right field. Lopez followed with an RBI infield single that scored Burger and gave the Rangers a 3-1 lead.
DeGrom allowed one run on seven hits over five-plus innings.
He struck out four and did not issue a walk. He left after Canzone and Arozarena opened the sixth with consecutive singles, but reliever Ryan Ahlstrom kept Seattle from scoring.
Duran pulled Texas within one run with a solo homer in the eighth. It was his 11th home run of the season and the Rangers’ only hit after the fourth inning.
Seattle added an insurance run in the ninth when Rodríguez was hit by a pitch and scored on Canzone’s double to right field. Canzone finished 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs.
Mariners closer Andrés Muñoz struck out the side in the ninth for his 18th save. Gabe Speier earned the win after pitching 1 1/3 hitless innings with three strikeouts.
Seattle finished with 14 hits, while Texas was held to six. The Rangers struck out 12 times and did not record a hit in seven of the nine innings.
Texas fell to 53-52 but remained atop the American League West, 1½ games ahead of Seattle. The Rangers had won the first two games of the four-game series.
The series finale is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. Monday at Globe Life Field. Kumar Rocker is scheduled to start for Texas against Seattle right-hander George Kirby.
