Three televised debate dates have been announced for Republican Ken Paxton and Democrat James Talarico as they compete for a Texas seat in the U.S. Senate.
Talarico’s campaign said Wednesday that it had accepted invitations from three groups of television stations to participate in debates in the Rio Grande Valley, Dallas and Austin.
The proposed debate schedule is:
Sept. 22: Rio Grande Valley, hosted by NBC, Telemundo and Hearst
Oct. 6: Dallas, hosted by WFAA and Tegna
Oct. 13: Austin, hosted by KXAN and Nexstar
Paxton’s campaign had not issued a statement confirming his participation in each of the three scheduled events as of Wednesday morning.
A senior adviser previously said Paxton planned to debate Talarico and was communicating with potential hosts. At that time, however, the campaign had not committed to a particular host or date.
The debates would bring together the two major-party nominees competing for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Sen. John Cornyn.
Paxton, the Texas attorney general, defeated Cornyn in the Republican primary runoff. Talarico, a state representative and former teacher, won the Democratic nomination after defeating U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett.
The Oct. 6 debate in Dallas would give North Texas voters a locally televised opportunity to compare the candidates before the November election.
