PHOENIX — Corey Seager hit a 458-foot, two-run home run and finished with three hits Sunday as the Texas Rangers held off the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-6 to win the series and gain ground in the American League West.
Seager went 3 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs. His first-inning homer, the longest by a Rangers player this season, followed Justin Foscue’s single and gave Texas an early 2-0 lead.
Cal Quantrill allowed two runs on five hits in six innings. The right-hander struck out four, did not walk a batter and threw 70 pitches. He left after allowing a leadoff single in the seventh because of back tightness.
Texas led 7-1 after six innings, but Arizona cut the deficit when Nolan Arenado hit a three-run homer in the seventh.
The Diamondbacks scored twice more in the ninth and put the tying run at second base. Jacob Latz retired Gabriel Moreno on a popup to secure his 29th save.
The victory gave Texas its first road series win since it won consecutive series at Toronto and Cleveland between June 25 and July 1. The Rangers had lost eight consecutive road series.
Texas improved to 74-76 and moved within one game of the Houston Astros, who were swept at Tampa Bay.
The Rangers also trail the Cleveland Guardians by two games for the final American League wild-card berth with 12 regular-season games remaining.
Nine of Texas’ final 12 games will be played at Globe Life Field, where the Rangers are 40-32 this season.
Texas begins a three-game home series against the Boston Red Sox at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday.
