EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The Dallas Cowboys failed to turn their only takeaway into points, allowed three consecutive touchdown drives and undercut a late rally with a taunting penalty before a missed extra point in a 28-20 season-opening loss to the New York Giants on Sunday night.
Dallas took possession at its 16 with two minutes left in the first half after Quinnen Williams forced Tyrone Tracy Jr. to fumble.
Shavon Revel Jr. recovered at the Dallas 19 and returned the ball to the 16.
But the Cowboys gained 20 yards before Dak Prescott threw an interception to Jevón Holland at the Giants’ 45 with 58 seconds left.
New York converted the giveaway on Jaxson Dart’s 15-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Likely with 25 seconds left, taking a 14-7 halftime lead.
The Giants opened the third quarter with a 12-play, 74-yard drive that consumed 8:01 and ended with Dart’s 2-yard touchdown pass to Likely.
Dallas answered with Javonte Williams’ 1-yard touchdown run to pull within 21-14, but Dart’s 9-yard scoring pass to Devin Singletary restored a two-touchdown lead.
Prescott found Williams for a 17-yard touchdown with 5:21 remaining, but Williams drew a 15-yard taunting penalty after the play.
The penalty moved the extra-point attempt back, and Brandon Aubrey missed wide right, leaving Dallas down eight.
The Cowboys never regained possession.
Dart completed 21 of 26 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns. Prescott finished 22 of 34 for 175 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
