On most Tuesday and Thursday mornings, while many people their age are easing into retirement, members of the DeSoto Legends lace up their cleats, grab their gloves and head to the softball field.
For these athletes, all 65 and older, the game is about more than wins and losses. It’s about staying healthy, maintaining friendships and proving that competitive sports don’t have an expiration date.
The DeSoto Legends compete in a North Texas senior softball league that includes teams from Richardson, McKinney, Farmers Branch, Lewisville and Mesquite.
From April through September, the team takes the field twice a week, playing a schedule that demands commitment and endurance.
Last season, the Legends completed a 36-game schedule, a testament to the dedication of players who continue to embrace competition decades after many athletes have stepped away from organized sports.
Their story reflects a growing movement among older adults who view athletics as a lifelong pursuit rather than something left behind with age.
Practices and games provide regular exercise, but teammates say the relationships built between innings are just as valuable.

The league also welcomes women ages 40 and older, with female athletes competing on teams throughout North Texas.
