ELLIS COUNTY, Texas — American Humane Society’s rescue team is helping care for more than 125 dogs and puppies rescued from unsafe and unsanitary conditions in Ellis County.
The organization partnered with the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office and officials in Ferris to provide emergency veterinary services and help move the animals to safety.
Many of the dogs found at the site needed urgent medical attention, according to American Humane Society. One of the dogs, a 1-year-old named Sweetie, had a wounded paw and was pregnant when rescuers arrived.
“When I learned about this heartbreaking case, I immediately hopped on a plane to deploy with our rescue team so I could meet these precious animals,” said Dr. Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of American Humane Society.
“It was devastating to see innocent dogs struggling to survive in such an unsafe, unsanitary environment. I was moved beyond words to witness their resilience and willingness to trust people again after being so let down.”

Ferris Animal Services officials said American Humane Society’s support helped provide resources and care during the rescue effort.
“American Humane Society stepped in for the dogs when no one else would, bringing resources, expertise, and a level of commitment that fundamentally changed the outcome for these lives,” said Todd McGehee, animal control officer for Ferris. “Ferris Animal Services is proud to stand behind a national leader that doesn’t just talk about compassion, but proves it through action.”
American Humane Society’s rescue team deploys to disaster and cruelty situations to feed, shelter and rescue animals. The organization says its teams help more than 85,000 animals each year.
